Remembering Forever

Remembrance Day always had a special meaning for Rosa Turner, who has been described as a "very nice, proper English lady" even though she lived in Alberta for over 40 years. While living in England during the war years, she joined the Civil Defense, studied first aid, ambulance work and gas warfare, and earned a medal for her volunteer work. She and her first husband, Andy Dunipace, met during the war and came to Canada several years later. Rosa's second husband, Art Turner, was also a war veteran.

When it came to making her will, Mrs. Turner knew exactly what she wanted to do. In memory of her late husband Arthur Turner, she left a bequest to the General Stewart Branch No. 4 of the Royal Canadian Legion to be used towards the perpetual public observance of Remembrance Day.

"She was especially interested in drawing the younger generation into remembering," said her lawyer and neighbour Glenn Morrison. "So in particular she wanted the money to go to support the Poppy Essay Poem and Poster Contest."

Knowing exactly what she wanted done, Mrs. Turner chose the Lethbridge Community Foundation as the vehicle to fulfill her wish. She created a designated trust for the General Stewart Branch No. 4, instructing the Foundation to invest the money and provide the interest to the Legion for the designated project.

"It was the perpetual existence of the Foundation that attracted her," explained Morrison. "At some point in the future the contest may not exist and this branch of the Legion may fold, but the Foundation will be here forever." By putting her trust in the Foundation Mrs. Turner ensured that her wish to support the public observance of Remembrance Day will be honoured.
