Starting a Tradition
For Nel Parsons, family roots go deep. She has lived in Lethbridge for more than 50 years and raised her children here. Her late husband Robert [Bob] built businesses — Parsons Electric and Parsons Hardware — that served the community for many years and the couple were active in community service. The family also have a cabin at Waterton Lakes National Park where a third generation now frolics. "We've had the cabin for 40 years," said Nel with a smile. "Our kids learned to swim there and now my grandchildren love to visit."
When Nel looked around for projects and places to support, several came to mind. "So much of our giving leaves this area. I wanted my donation to stay locally and work here," she said "Lethbridge has been good to us and I look forward to contributing back to it". Nel's son, Tim, was aware of the Foundation as a possible avenue to fulfill Nel's wishes. "I had read some of their publications and knew others who had
donated. Based on what we knew, we were attracted to the Foundation," he said. As a result, Nel started the Parsons Family Endowment Fund with the Lethbridge Community Foundation. "I like the fact that I get to choose the projects I support," she said.
With her grandchildren uppermost in her mind, Nel is eyeing improvements to the playground in Waterton as a possible worthy project. "I am also interested in arts and cultural activities, so I'm sure there are many projects locally that I can support," she said. Nel is looking far into the future for the Endowment Fund. "We have three genertions right here, and l know they will carry it on."
