LL Pahulje & J Cassis Family Fund [Donor Advised Fund]
Family Millennium Project
It all started with the family looking for ideas for a great millennium project and ended with the formation of the L. L Pahulje & J. Cassis Family Fund with the Lethbridge Community Foundation. "We wanted to do something to mark the start of the new millennium," said Ludvik Pahulje. "And we were looking for something that would last."
The St. Vincent de Paul Society was the most recent recipient. Others that have benefited in the past include the École St. Mary School playground, Interfaith Food Bank, Terry Fox Run [Canadian Cancer Society], and the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
"It gives us, as parents, the opportunity to exemplify and share the spirit of philanthropy with our children," said Jehan. She added that since the family started the fund, which they contribute to annually, the children have become more aware of what is going on and more observant about the world around them. "They are eager to make a difference. They can't wait for each fall when the time comes for us to make our decision."
The family was familiar with the Lethbridge Community Foundation because Ludvik had been on the Board of Directors from 1993 to 1999. "Having been involved with the group and seen how it works, I know it is a good, well managed organization. I have faith and trust that they take good care of donations and deliberate long and hard before giving out grants to worthwhile causes," he said. During and since Ludvik's time on the Foundation Board, assets have grown and the Foundation has increased its profile in the community by opening its own office and hosting numerous public functions.

"We also wanted our children to learn early about the importance of caring for others," added Jehan Cassis. Stefan was six and Mikaela was four when the family started the fund. I has become a family tradition to get together each year to decide how the income in the family endowment fund will be used. "Once a year we sit down as a family and brainstorm about causes we might like to support," said Jehan. "Then we research the groups and make a final decision."
