A little means a lot

It only takes a little to make a big difference "I was really struck by what a huge impact something as small as dolls could make," said Trish Kindley, recalling a presentation by the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Society at the last Friends of the Foundation Dinner. The Society had received a grant from the Lethbridge Community Foundation to purchase the dolls, which are used in the Society's educational program.

"The fetal alcohol syndrome dolls are not a glamorous program and are so inexpensive that they probably wouldn't have qualified under other funding schemes, but imagine their value if they can save one child from suffering from this debilitating condition."

"I found that presentation really inspiring," Trish said. Realizing that it only takes a little to make a big difference, Trish and Kevin Kindley decided to start an Emerging Fund with the Lethbridge Community Foundation.

The couple had become aware of the Foundation and its efforts to support charitable causes in Southern Alberta three or four years ago, when friends invited them to the Friends of the Foundation Dinner. "Each year after the  dinner we talked about  doing something, but then got caught up in everyday life," said Trish. "So last year we decided we had to do something right away, before we forgot again."

"With our young family we really don't have a lot of time to contribute, but we felt we could make a financial contribution," said Kevin. The couple has two active sons, Michael, aged four, and David, aged two. "I looked into the possibility of an insurance policy and then decided that an Emerging Fund would work best for us and the Foundation. Contributing $1,000 a year really isn't that much, and over the next 10 years of contributions, that amount will steadily grow to more than $10,000." It adds up!

"We've lived here for more than 23 years and really like the community and its location," said Kevin, a dentist who has practiced in Lethbridge since 1980. "And we think it is important to contribute to our community. This Emerging Fund lets us do that." The family does not have a specific plan for the use of their fund once it reaches the $10,000 mark, but they figure they still have a few years to decide.
