Easy Access for All

When you are part of a community, it is important to be able to get together and share. That concept was in the minds of the Board of Stewards at St. Paul's United Church in Milk River, which also serves Coutts. They realized that their congregation was getting older and that the stairs into the church could become a barrier preventing members from joining the weekly church service.

"We didn't want to lose the longtime members who have been the backbone of our community for so many years," said Cameron Schmitt, a board member. "We wanted everyone to be able to come and worship."

The board explored several options, including a lift, before deciding that a wheelchair ramp would work best for both regular Sunday services and funerals. However, for the small church of about 225 members, constructing a ramp was an expensive proposition.

"The donation we received from the Foundation was pivotal," said Cameron."It made the project doable." The ramp is now completed and will provide easy access to the church for the whole community for many years to come.
