Sharing Time
Sometimes a little individual time and attention can make all the difference in the world. Through its Mentorship Program, the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization provides both. Community volunteers are invited to spend just one hour a week mentoring a 'little' person who could really use some support. "Sometimes the children just need a little encouragement and individual attention," said volunteer Barbara Crawford.
The program takes place in school during school hours. The volunteers are matched with youngsters who might
benefit from the contact. "The teachers are wonderful and so helpful," Barbara said. "My 'little' and I meet in the library and spend time together playing games, doing crafts, reading or doing other activities together."
What the pair do together depends on their interests. Sometimes Barbara has brought her keyboard to school and at other times her friendly ferret. "We sometimes play memory games and she beats me every time," she laughed.
Barbara had several reasons for getting involved with the mentorship program. "I raised a son and really wanted to spent time with a little girl," she said. "And I'm of an age to be a grandma and I guess this gives me the opportunity to play grandma for a while each week." She said the program enables her to make a difference in the life of a young person. "I really feel I'm doing something special."
Barbara feels she gets as much out of the program as her 'little' does. "I really enjoy sharing and getting her perspective on things."
The program also fits into her busy work schedule. "I originally thought I'd be a big sister but found that the time commitment was just too much. This program is perfect. I'd recommend it to all grandparents, especially if their grandchildren live far away."
