New Centre Serves Many Purposes
The Windsor Heritage Drop-In Centre in Lundbreck serves multiple purposes. "We wanted to hit as many birds as possible with this one stone," explained John Sinnott, President of the Windsor Heritage Drop-In Centre Society.
The Drop-In Centre provides seniors in the Lundbreck-Cowley area with a place to get together for social and educational purposes. It serves as an additional community hall for gatherings and also commemorates a former landmark in the community.
"The Windsor Hotel was built in about 1910 and served our community until it burned down in 1963," John said. "The children of the hotel owner, Walter Sapeta, still own the property and offered to donate it for this project if we made a memorial to their dad."
As a result, the new Drop-In Centre is a replica of the old Windsor Hotel. "It looks exactly like the two-story hotel on the outside, but is only one story on the inside," said John. "We've got in-floor heat, completely equipped kitchen facilities and washrooms. The Drop-In Centre can be used by the whole community. It is functional and comfortable."
It has taken a dedicated group of volunteers more than three years of hard work to bring the project to completion. "It was originally my wife's idea about 10 years ago and it's been in the back of my mind since then," said John. "We turned it into Lundbreck's Centennial project and got the shell up in 2007. It has taken a lot of volunteer effort, and the whole community has been involved." Those efforts took the form of volunteer labour in the construction process and, of course, fundraising for the project. The Lethbridge Community Foundation was among the organizations that supported the project with a grant.
