More Usable Space
The new flooring, which has dramatically improved the usability of the basement in Cardston's Carriage House Theatre was made possible through a grant from the Lethbridge Community Foundation in conjunction with a Community Incentive Project [CIP] grant. The Foundation grant enabled the Theatre to access additional funds from CIP.
"Wow, what a difference the new carpet and laminate flooring have made," said Alonna Leavitt, Managing Director, Carriage House Theatre. "The rehearsal space and green room are more aesthetically pleasing and easier to work in. It improved the usability of the space tremendously."
That new floor is getting lots of action. The Carriage House hosts a Children's Theatre Academy for Grades one through six, which attracts more than 200 participants. They recently entered into a joint venture with Cardston High School to present a musical annually. "It is a joy to see the children and youth develop their talents," said Alonna.
The Carriage House also has a busy summer season with 42 nights of performances. "Last year 8,700 people saw three different shows, and 85% came from outside of Cardston," she said.
"The Theatre is becoming a real centre for the community. We hardly have any dark nights," said Alonna. In addition to in-house productions, the Carriage House is a venue for movies, community productions, school performances and community events. "I think we're helping create a vibrant and active community."
