Our History

In 1966, the nine founding members of the Lethbridge Community Foundation envisioned their community made stronger through philanthropy - gifts of time and money. To make that vision a reality, they initiated a permanent community foundation endowment that would provide grants to charitable organizations far into the future.  The Lethbridge Community Fund started with $237 in donations and the endowment has now grown to almost $13 million in 2008.

Since that time, people in all walks of life from across southern Alberta have created personal legacies through gifts of all sizes that continue to make a lasting difference. On April 18th 1966 The Lethbridge Community Foundation was incorporated under Chapter 120 of the Statues of Alberta.

The nine founding members of the Lethbridge Community Foundation envisioned their community made stronger through giving. The prominent city and business leaders worked to begin a trust that would provide funding to charitable organizations far into the future.  Donations, small and large, would be pooled together and invested; grant distribution would respond to the ever-changing needs of the community.  People from all walks of life could help to create a legacy that would make as difference in people's lives.

The Lethbridge Community Foundation was created by an act of the Alberta legislature on April 18, 1966.  Since then, countless donors and volunteers have continued the work of the founding members, ensuring a growing endowment fund to improve the lives of the people of Lethbridge and surrounding communities.
